“Careful with the ship, Spock, she’s brand new.”

“Damn it, man, I’m a doctor not a physicist!”

“I have been, and always shall be, your friend.”

Spock! Kirk! McCoy! Uhura! Scotty! Pike! All of them are here!!! In spirit mostly but also the real Spock.

From start to finish it’s a glory fest of quotations and quirks. But more than that it’s a film in itself with story, character (a LOT of character) and sets/action all of it’s own. The humour is wonderful and the relationship between the actors obviously good. This is a great start to the ‘new’ franchise.

So what about the bad points? Simon Pegg’s Scotty doesnt work for me yet. I dare say it will some day but right now he’s a bit too glib. However, this is a new film so on that level he’s ok. What else, um…..  not really much. The acting is brilliant as much as it can be for an SF action movie and the effects are all relentless and heart-pounding. Leonard is cool and acts as the traditional ‘hand-over’ from old to new as has happened in all the previous series and films.

There’s not much for a Sci-fi geek not to like as long as he/she gets over the newness of it all. And he/she should just suck it up and accept the changes since time and tech movies always need to move on and reinspire.

In essence – THIS IS FREAKIN’ STAR TREK! GET WITH THE DEAL HERE AND WATCH IT!!!

About Simon Trail

There has long been a tradition that a knight will show a crest and / or motto of his family. I shall endeavour to provide such a distinguishing and immediately descriptive thingy over my management of this site. Please be patient. Or Doctor if you're David Tennent.
