“I am never going to see a merman. Ever.”

Obviously a film made by those that know the horror industry well. Just about every joke you can think of is in here and every reference to those tried and tested generic plots of scary movies. There are many scares and a lot of menace as well as some gruesome moments but the best part is the ‘behind the scenes’ aspect that just keeps you thinking enough to make this one a little out of the ordinary.
Unfortunately it’s also a little light to become a classic scare-em-up. Maybe a cult and perhaps they should have made different variations that fans could then try to guess – once you’ve watched it, you’ll know what I mean. Not to say there isn’t a lot of horror moments with gore, blood –  a LOT o blood in one scene – a and more monsters than you can shake a stick at. Also, the cast are perfectly chosen to mirror both the normal college-student-death-in-the-woods as well as the slightly more brainy arc in the background.
But in the end, it’s a kind of clean version where everything is a little more fun than fright.
Mind you, I’d watch it again and advise both fans of the genre and newbies to give it a go and try to find all the in-jokes.

DVD extras: Good visual effects and making-of. Not grand but insightful. There are some bits that get a bit dull including a Q&A at a convention but not bad overall. No great outtakes or gag reel. Always miss that.
