Under The Skin

Imagine a single character but filmed amoungst real crowds and people. Now add a touch of strange, loneliness. Now throw in wonderfully muted effects and strange moments of odd wonder and you have Under The Skin.

It’s…well, to be honest I found it enchanting. I know that’s not the first word that comes to mind when you watch it but there’s a fairy tale element at work, albeit scifi fairytale. Almost a Brothers Grimmm affair, really.

Anyway, you cant fault the production for tenacity, bravery and quality camera work. None of it looks out of place. The soundtrack is very complimentary and the script must be almost all direction as opposed to dialog. Don’t go thinking this is a highly packed movie but also dont think you’re going to be bored. Despite the simplicity at work, most scenes have an incredible pull and I was always waiting to see what happened next or to try to work out what was going on!

Would this movie have worked with an unknown girl in the middle? Maybe but she’d have to be pretty, engaging, good natured, have strong acting skills to keep in character and also have a broken, sad quality without having to try to hard. I’m impressed. The lassie done real good and showed a performance that pulled her up out of the Hollywood pack for me.

Before you ask, yes, she gets her kit off. No, it doesnt take over the show, in fact it hardly seems out of place at all. Yes, I would have rated her highly in this if she hadn’t. She’s a brave girl for doing it though.

Good movie, incredibly personal and should be a cult. Of course, maybe I’m also bias as the location is in and around Glasgow but it could have been anywhere. In fact my wife said she was reminded of the Scandanavian films and TV series. I know what she means.

Bluray extras: Lots of very simple interviews with the crew that give incites and photos of the shooting but no gag reel or outtakes or Scarlett or personal diary style footage. Missed chance but they didn’t look to be rolling in the money so, fair do.
